Virgil van Dijk hailed Liverpool's young guns after leading an inexperienced Reds side to Carabao Cup glory over Chelsea.

The Dutchman's header with less than three minutes of extra-time remaining settled a close contest, sealing a success that had looked improbable pre-match due to a cluster of key players missing out through injury.

The 32-year-old defender, captaining his club to silverware for first time, believes the performances of those stepping into the side proved pivotal.

Van Dijk told Sky Sports: "All the young boys on the pitch, in extra time. It's incredible, I'm so proud of the team.

"It was an intense game for both sides, they had chances we had chances. Amazing.

"It's my first trophy as Liverpool captain and it's all for the fans so let's enjoy it."

Van Dijk was imperious in defence for Liverpool and even had a goal ruled out earlier in the game as Wataru Endo was deemed to have interfered with play for a technical offside.

Eventually getting his redemption in the dying minutes, the Reds skipper was left feeling overwhelmed come the full-time whistle.

He added: "It's emotion, it's everything I am so proud of the boys.

"All of the young boys playing their part in what we achieved today is incredible and we move on to more now."

Liverpool appear to be on a mission to give Klopp a memorable send off after the German announced his decision to leave Anfield this summer.

The Reds are still well placed in the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup, meaning a historic quadruple remains on the cards.

Van Dijk spoke on the importance of enjoying every moment with his departing boss over the coming months.

He said: "You should always savour the good moments. This is definitely one of them.

"Listen, we will never take things for granted and you see today it could have been the other way as well that we lost.

"But we did a job, even with all the problems we have had before the game.

"I'm so proud, proud to be part of this club and especially proud of the young boys."
