Tottenham welcome Liverpool to North London for this Carabao Cup semi-final first leg and the hosts will still have lingering nightmares following a pre-Christmas 6-3 thrashing from Arne Slot's side.

Spurs were woeful defensively in that game and Ange Postecoglou still has major worries with key personnel missing at the back as the Reds come calling again.

The Aussie boss has talked up his ability to bring silverware to the club in his second season but this is a daunting test.

However, his side could be good enough keep the tie in the melting pot before going to Anfield.

Team news

It remains a horror show for Tottenham with Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies now joined by Destiny Udogie on the injury list.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains out and his deputy Fraser Forster is ill. Czech keeper Antonin Kinsky was signed at the weekend and has been cleared to play, although Brandon Austin could retain his place after excelling against Newcastle on Saturday.

Pape Sarr and James Maddison are suspended but Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Radu Dragusin may be fit enough to play some part.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Joe Gomez are Liverpool's chief concerns, while it will be interesting to see how Slot rotates his panel here, especially with an FA Cup upset unlikely against League Two Accrington on Saturday.

The stats

Liverpool have scored at least two goals in 12 of their last 15 matches against Tottenham in all competitions.

Wednesday's visitors have been winning at both half-time and full-time in six of their last eight away matches against Tottenham.

The Reds are unbeaten in their 14 away games this season.

Tottenham have won just one of their last eight games at home in all competitions.

Both teams have scored in Spurs' last 10 home games, with over 3.5 goals landing in six of their last nine.

Prediction

All common sense points to Liverpool running riot at Tottenham, as they did just over a fortnight ago in that 6-3 league win.

Spurs were better than a 2-1 defeat implied against in-form Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies got plenty rub of the green with refereeing decisions.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were not at their best in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday at Anfield.

Postecoglou and his side must now try and see if this is going to be the start of a blip from the Reds, who have seven more games sandwiched between this and the second leg on February 6.

Slot has routinely made changes in this competition and, with that hectic programme ahead, he may stick with that policy.

Liverpool only edged out Brighton and Southampton in the previous two rounds and have not been at their best in this competition so far.

Spurs, after narrowly avoiding an early exit at Coventry in September, have dumped out both Manchester clubs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

They were inspired at times against United last month, leading 3-0 not long after half-time, but clamoured over the line for a 4-3 win after Forster handed the Red Devils several lifelines.

If Liverpool are just a shade under concert pitch, Spurs might manage a positive outcome here, though whether they can convert that on Merseyside next month is another matter entirely.
