- Tottenham have won just one of their last eight fixtures
Recommended bet: Southampton or draw double chance

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is coming under increasing scrutiny and could do with a positive performance and result from his team against Premier League basement boys Southampton.

Postecoglou was an unsettled presence on the touchline as Spurs came from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw away to Rangers in Thursday’s Europa League clash.

And he knows that a failure to defeat Southampton would only increase calls for a change in the Spurs dugout.

However, there is also plenty of pressure on Saints gaffer Russell Martin, who has overseen a dismal start to the campaign.

Martin’s charges have won only one of 15 Premier League games and are positioned eight points adrift of safety.

Team news

Jack Stephens continues his suspension and Gavin Bazunu (Achilles) and Ross Stewart (calf) are long-term absentees. Adam Lallana, Will Smallbone (both thigh) and Juan Larios (unspecified injury) miss out and Aaron Ramsdale (wrist) is a doubt.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur are suspended and Tottenham’s extensive injury list features Guglielmo Vicario (ankle), Richarlison, Ben Davies, Wilson Odobert, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven (all thigh).

Dominic Solanke, Pape Matar Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski started on the bench for Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Rangers but all three should come into the starting eleven.

The stats

Southampton have lost four of their last five matches.

Four of Southampton’s last five home games have generated at least five goals.

Tottenham have kept just two clean sheets in their last 13 Premier League matches.

Both teams have scored in eight of Tottenham’s last 10 fixtures.

Seven of Tottenham’s last 10 away games have generated at least three goals.

Prediction

Southampton have got a mountain to climb in their scrap for Premier League survival but they have a good chance of increasing their points tally when taking on injury-hit Tottenham on the south coast.

Defensive errors have played a key role in Saints’ dreadful start to the season but there are no signs of Russell Martin altering his tactics.

Martin will continue with his brave and some would say foolhardy strategy and it might pay off against a Tottenham side who will approach the game in a similar manner.

Spurs were at their best in last month’s 4-0 success over Manchester City but they have struggled either side of their triumph at the Etihad and have slipped into the bottom half of the table.

Postecoglou’s outfit defended dreadfully in last Sunday’s 4-3 loss at home to Chelsea and the errors could keep on coming, allowing Southampton to avoid a fifth loss in six games.
