Fabian Schar looks set to make an impact at both ends of the field when Switzerland take on Italy

The round of 16 begins as defending champions Italy take on Switzerland, both having finished runners-up behind the dominant side in their group with the Azzurri needing a last-gasp goal against Croatia to send them through.

The other match sees hosts Germany face Denmark, who squeezed through after drawing all three group games and only scoring twice.

Switzerland v Italy (Saturday, 5pm)

Bet 1: Draw

Italy’s reputation as a team that prioritises defence is not without basis and they may ensure this is a cagey clash against Switzerland.

The Swiss looked solid in their group, particularly when drawing with Germany, and they have now seen nine of their last 14 games end in stalemate — this one seems destined for extra time.

Bet 2: Fabian Schar to have a shot

Fabian Schar is not afraid to step out of defence and take a pop at goal but he is also an aerial threat from set pieces.

The Newcastle man is averaging a shot per game at this tournament and is fancied to have an attempt.

Bet 3: Nicolo Barella to concede a foul

Nicolo Barella has been busy in Italy’s midfield in this tournament, making nine tackles, and he has also committed three fouls.

Side with him to give away another foul against a tidy Swiss midfield.

Germany vs Denmark (Saturday, 8pm)

Bet 1: Germany to win

Germany have won five of their last seven games and should be able to get the better of a Denmark team that failed to win a group-stage match.

Bet 2: Jamal Musiala to score or register an assist

Jamal Musiala has already proven his worth with two goals at this tournament but the Bayern Munich man also had five Bundesliga assists in 20 starts last season.

He is fancied for a goal or an assist in this one.

Bet 3: Kai Havertz to be shown a card

No Germany player has given away more fouls than Kai Havertz and he was carded 11 times in 30 Premier League starts for Arsenal last season.

Side with him to pick up another.
