Mainz are looking to bounce back after tasting defeat for the first time since February

- Mainz are unbeaten in their last six at home (W4, D2)
- Schalke have lost eight of their 14 Bundesliga away games
- Recommended bet: Mainz to win

Mainz’s European aspirations took a knock last time out as they went down 3-0 at key rivals Wolfsburg but they can bounce back when they entertain relegation-threatened Schalke on Friday.

The visitors have picked up two wins in their last three games to give themselves a chance of avoiding the drop but their away form remains a real concern.

Schalke have only won once on their travels in the league all season and have failed to score in their last two trips.

Team News

Mainz defender Silvan Widmer picked up an ankle issue in the loss to Wolfsburg and the Switzerland international has been ruled out, joining long-term injury victim Jonathan Burkardt on the sidelines.

Widmer has suffered ligament damage and it remains to be seen as to whether he will be able to feature again this season, with Danny da Costa in line to deputise in his absence.

Schalke have a number of injury concerns with up to six players missing for the trip to the Mewa Arena.

Eder Balanta has missed the last three games with a knee issue, fellow defender Cedric Brunner is out with a shoulder problem and keeper Ralf Fahrmann has a groin injury, meaning Alexander Schwolow will start in goal.

The Stats

Mainz are unbeaten in their last six home games and overcame league leaders Bayern Munich 3-1 in their last game at the Mewa Arena.

Prior to the defeat to Wolfsburg, Die Nullfunfer were unbeaten in 10 overall with six wins and four draws.

Schalke have only managed six victories in the league all season, although two of those have come in their last three games.

The Royal Blues have been poor travellers all season, however, with just eight points to show from 14 trips so far.

Schalke have struggled for goals on the road and they have managed just seven goals on their travels, while they have the Bundesliga’s worst attack overall with just 28 goals scored in 30 games.

Prediction

Mainz are still in contention for a place in Europe next season and should be able to make the most of home advantage against this travel-sick Schalke side on Friday.

The visitors’ terrible away record and their struggles for goals on the road, combined with Mainz’s strong recent home form, clearly points to a home win in this Bundesliga fixture.

A win for the hosts appeals, while backing Mainz to cover a -1 handicap at 1/1 is another option as five of their six home Bundesliga wins this season have been by two or more goals.
