Luke Molyneux netted his eighth goal of the season as Doncaster continued their League Two promotion charge with a 1-0 win over Gillingham at Priestfield.

John Coleman was taking charge of his first game as Gills boss for the early kick-off, and his team started brightly with Jack Nolan’s corner coming off Elliott Nevitt before bouncing inches wide of the post.

Max Ehmer’s close-range header was well saved by Ted Sharman-Lowe in the visiting goal, with Glenn Morris at the other end gathering Jamie Sterry’s drilled free-kick.

Molyneux opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, pouncing on a poor defensive header from Armani Little to go through on goal, lifting the ball over the oncoming Morris.

Billy Sharp should have added a second shortly after, but blazed an effort over from inside the box.

On-loan Crystal Palace winger Asher Agbinone forced a fine save from Sharman-Lowe midway through the second half as the Gills searched for an equaliser.

Nolan went close in the dying stages, but Grant McCann’s men defended valiantly to see out the game.
