Arne Slot’s start to life at Anfield could not have gone much better, with Liverpool entering this weekend top of the Premier League and coming into this clash with Aston Villa off the back of a stunning 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

They are worthy favourites for Saturday’s clash at Anfield and may prove simply too strong for Unai Emery’s Villa, who are staring down the barrel of a fourth consecutive defeat, having lost to Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Club Brugge in the past two weeks.

Team news

Alisson, Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott remain out but are expected to return after the upcoming international break, while Federico Chiesa may also be available by the end of the month.

Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are in fine form and are battling it out to start on the left of Liverpool’s front three, although the latter could dislodge Darwin Nunez up front if Slot wishes to start both.

Matty Cash and Ross Barkley remain out for the Villans, who will likely bring Pau Torres, Lucas Digne and Amadou Onana back into the starting XI following Wednesday’s defeat in Brussels.

The stats

Aston Villa have lost their last three matches in all competitions, conceding seven goals and scoring just two in that sequence.

Since losing 7-2 in a supporter-less Villa Park in 2020, Liverpool have gone eight games without a defeat against Villa.

Both teams have scored in six of the pair’s last eight combined games as well as in four of the last five meetings between the two.

Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have scored a combined seven goals in Liverpool’s last three matches

Prediction

Villa boss Emery received an unwelcome birthday gift on Sunday as his side were thrashed 4-1 by Tottenham and he is yet to be granted a kind present from his squad, as they were beaten 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

And a miserable birthday week looks set to go from bad to worse on Saturday as the Villans prepare to take on Liverpool, who have won 14 of their 16 matches this term, are unbeaten in eight meetings with Villa and will be full of confidence after thrashing Leverkusen.

It is hard to envisage anything other than a Liverpool win occurring at Anfield this weekend, given the Reds' current form and the fact Villa have lost three on the spin, but an expecting Kop may have to be patient for that victory to materialise.

Slot’s men have been level at half-time before putting on a second-half spectacle to secure the win in each of their last three games, while Villa have gone 10 matches without trailing at the break,

The visitors seem set to stand strong for a while at Anfield, before eventually succumbing to the rampant Reds.
