Atalanta to win

Club Brugge limped over the line to squeeze into the Champions League play-offs and will be hoping a hostile atmosphere at the Jan Breydelstadion can draw the fire out of free-scoring Atalanta in the first leg of their play-off.

Team news

Club Brugge head coach Nicky Hayen looks to have a full squad at his disposal.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini is set to be without frontmen Ademola Lookman and Gianluca Scamacca which means he will likely deploy a front three of Mateo Retegui, Charles De Ketelaere and Mario Pasalic.

Central defender Odilon Kossounou is out and Sead Kolasinac is a doubt.

Club Brugge have won just one of their last six matches.

They qualified for the play-offs in the final spot and are the lowest scorers of the 24 teams left in the competition with seven goals.

The Belgian champions have failed to win any of their last 15 European games against Italian opponents. That includes this season's games at AC Milan (lost 3-1) and at home to Juventus (0-0).

Atalanta have won 10 of their last 14 away games in all competitions.

Last season's Europa League winners qualified for the play-offs in ninth spot.

They kept clean sheets in five of their eight group-stage ties and are the joint third highest scorers in the competition with 20 goals. Only Barcelona (28) and Borussia Dortmund (22) scored more.

Prediction

Serie A contenders and Europa League winners Atalanta have looked superb throughout the 2024-25 Champions League group stage and can carry on their good form by winning at Club Brugge.

The onus may be avoiding defeat in the first, away leg of any two-legged tie, but Atalanta are set up to be positive and it is hard to see them not making inroads into the Brugge defence.

With wins tucked away at Shakhtar (3-0), Stuttgart (2-0) and Young Boys (6-1) and a 2-2 draw at Barcelona, heading away from Bergamo clearly does not fluster Gianpiero Gasperini's free-scoring charges.

They warmed up for this trip with a 5-0 romp at Verona on Saturday where Mateo Retegui grabbed four goals to take his tally to 23 for the season.

Club Brugge are on a disappointing run of one win in six and snuck into the play-offs after a 3-1 loss at Manchester City.

They have looked decent on occasions — beating Aston Villa 1-0, for example, and drawing 0-0 with Juventus — but just seven goals scored in eight games tells its own story.
