Transfer Talk: Reds see Darwin as key to evolution after Mane
Liverpool are reportedly eager to seal a move for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez and are prepared to break their transfer record to clinch a deal.
The Uruguayan, 22, is one of Europe’s rising stars after netting 34 goals for the Portuguese giants last season and plenty of suitors are said to be chasing him.
Admirers include the likes of Atletico Madrid and Manchester United but the Mail say the Reds will blow the competition away by tabling a big-money offer.
The report indicates the Anfield club are ready to break their current transfer record — the £75million they paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018 — to land Nunez’s signature.
The deal could rise to as high as £85m for Nunez, with the player himself said to be keen on a move to Merseyside.
The FA Cup and Carabao Cup winners are preparing for life after Sadio Mane, who is strongly linked with the exit door at Anfield.
The Senegalese international has formed a key part of their attack during the last six seasons and managed 23 goals in all competitions during the 2021-22 campaign.
Replacing his effectiveness in front of goal will be paramount if he does leave, and boss Jurgen Klopp sees Nunez as the man to fill that void.
The South American can feature on the left as well as up front, similar to the role Mane played under Klopp last term.
