A superb stoppage-time free-kick from Thelo Aasgaard sealed Wigan a 2-1 League One victory at Stevenage as both sides ended the match with 10 men.

Dale Taylor had appeared as a half-time substitute and scored 10 minutes later to put the Latics in front, slicking in a Jensen Weir free-kick.

Weir then became the villain when he cynically took the legs of Louis Thompson as the Boro man ran away from him and he was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

It was unsportsmanlike and Dan Kemp seemingly punished it when he volleyed Stevenage level after 83 minutes, Dan Sweeney’s cushioned header giving him the chance.

But a counter-attack in second-half stoppage-time was ended by a second yellow card for Louis Thompson and – with the midfielder back in the dressing room – Aasgaard curled the resulting free-kick from 22 yards, over the wall and into the top corner.

The frantic finish was in contrast to the first half when they were a lack of clear-cut opportunities.

Those that did exist belonged to Boro with Kane Smith’s free-kick fizzed in from the left the best of them, that needing to be beaten away by Sam Tickle.

Wigan’s best moment came from Will Goodwin, who curled a chance wide after Tickle’s goal-kick had bounced through to him.

He was also booked inside 17 seconds for a foul on Nathan Thompson.
