Man Utd get Shaw-fire cover as Reguilon joins from Spurs
Sergio Reguilon has completed a switch to Manchester United to provide cover for injured left-back Luke Shaw.
The Spain international, 26, joins the Red Devils on a season-long loan from Tottenham after spending last term at Atletico Madrid — where he made just 12 appearances in all competitions.
United were in advanced talks with Chelsea over a move for Marc Cucurella but his appearance in the Blues' Carabao Cup victory over AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday night reportedly complicated matters.
After completing his move to Old Trafford, Reguilon said: "In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.
"Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.
"I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season. I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities."
United's football director John Murtough added: "Once it became clear that we needed to bring in another left-back we assessed a number of targets and acted quickly to sign Sergio.
"He possesses all the required qualities to help us achieve our aims this season.
"He has good experience in both the Premier League and in European competitions, so he is ready to come into the squad and perform straight away."
Reguilon became a key player for Spurs after joining in September 2020 but was then surprisingly omitted from Antonio Conte's squad for the 2022 pre-season tour of South Korea, which eventually led to the defender's temporary departure last summer.
The ex-Real Madrid ace will hope to rediscover his best form with the Red Devils and should be presented with plenty of opportunities to do so by manager Erik ten Hag.
Shaw's deputy Tyrell Malacia is also on United's injury list and neither player will be available for selection until after this month's international break at the earliest.
