Late Danny Johnson brace salvages a point for Walsall at home to Salford
Danny Johnson’s late double helped Sky Bet League Two leaders Walsall avoid a third straight defeat as they came from behind to draw 2-2 with Salford.
Cole Stockton’s early strike and a cool Hakeeb Adelakun finish put Salford in control with 15 minutes remaining, but two close-range efforts from Johnson rescued a point for Walsall.
Salford led after just four minutes when Adelakun’s cross to Stockton was poked beneath goalkeeper Tommy Simkin.
Walsall nearly levelled as Manchester United loanee Ethan Wheatley swept Connor Barrett’s near-post cross against the upright and Taylor Allen drilled just wide from 20 yards.
Ammies keeper Jamie Jones saved well from a Allen free-kick before Wheatley poked another great chance wide.
Salford went close to a second either side of half-time as Adelakun curled wide and Stockton’s clever flick was superbly tipped over the bar by a diving Simkin.
The visitors did double their lead after 75 minutes as Matty Lund sent Adelakun clear to round off a lightning counter.
But Johnson poked home Evan Weir’s deep cross to give Walsall hope and nodded in an 87th-minute equaliser after Salford failed to deal with a high ball.
