Chelsea's Reece James scored against Tottenham, continuing his impressive start to the campaign

Reece James put in a fine performance against Tottenham — scoring Chelsea’s second in the 2-2 draw.

It is the perfect way to start a big season for James, 22, as he looks to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s first-choice XI for the World Cup.

But he also has a big role to play for Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge as the Blues try to establish themselves as title contenders.

We turn the spotlight on the right-back ahead of Sunday’s trip to old rivals Leeds.

Starting strong

It really has been an impressive start to the 2022-23 campaign for James.

In two games, he has created one big chance, four opportunities in total and completed both take-ons he has attempted.

James took his chance against Spurs with aplomb, smashing the ball past skipper Hugo Lloris.

James said: "I love scoring and I was in the right position. Actually, I saw Lloris go down and I waited a bit.

"I wasn't sure what to do, he went down very early, but luckily I scored!"

Differing positions

James’ versatility only increases his worth to Tuchel — and to Southgate too.

At Everton in their opening game he started in his preferred wing-back position, while against Spurs he was on the right of a back three.

James has the pace and strength to adapt to that more defensive role, which he may have to do more often if Chelsea do not bring in another centre-half this summer.

Ahead of the season, James said: "I personally prefer to play wing-back out of the two positions but Thomas is the manager and I’m the player so wherever I’m required to play, I’ll always play.

"I’ve played a number of positions before and I’m used to it now so it’s just about adapting on the day.

"Wherever I’m asked to play, I’ll do my best and try to help the team as much as I can."

Right man for the job

If a centre-back does come in, James will not have to fill in too often because he is the only top-class right wing-back in Tuchel’s squad currently.

Cesar Azpilicueta has been a fine servant but does not provide the attacking impetus that the German boss wants in that role.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was used there against Spurs, further emphasising how much Chelsea may rely on James.

And that gives him a great chance to state his case to Southgate.

England’s strength

Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both key men for their teams

James, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier would all hope to make Southgate's first-choice XI.

But James has got the skill set to prove he is the man to start in Qatar.

Due to Trippier’s injury problems, it is difficult to compare his stats from last season to the other three.

James' five goals were more than both Walker and Alexander-Arnold, while he had nine assists — three fewer than the Liverpool full-back.

Liverpool often rely on Alexander-Arnold as a creator, yet his 0.57 big chances and 2.84 opportunities created per 90 minutes were only slightly above James (0.43 and 2.32).

Their passing stats are remarkably similar too, although the Liverpool man’s unique role means he attempts more long passes.

There really is very little between the trio — but there are plenty of games for James to make his case.

Take your chance

For now, James will be focused on building his fitness and helping Chelsea win games.

A hamstring problem disrupted much of his first three months of 2022 and he will be desperate to avoid a repeat.

As one of the standout right-backs in the world, let alone England, playing regularly will allow him to showcase his talents.

And there is no doubting they are plentiful.
