Tuesday’s Champions League action kicks off with an all-French affair as Brest and Paris Saint-Germain clash in the knockout play-offs.

Brest have surprised many by claiming a place in the top 24 of the league format, but this looks like a step too far for Eric Roy’s men.

History is certainly stacked against the hosts, who have failed to beat PSG in any of their last 20 meetings, with their opponents winning 18 of those encounters.

The French champions have already secured the league double over Brest, winning 3-1 at the Parc des Princes in September before securing a 5-2 away win earlier this month.

It is also worth noting that the last six games between the two clubs have seen both sides find the back of the net.

Luis Enrique’s squad go into this tie in top form, with PSG on a 16-game unbeaten run which includes a 4-1 victory over Monaco on Friday evening.

The Ligue 1 leaders have averaged 2.76 goals per league game this season and scored 14 times when finishing 15th in the Champions League standings.

Meanwhile, Brest have lost four of their last 10 matches and fell to defeat in the last two games of the league format, to Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid.

The home team are unable to play their home matches at their Stade Francis-Le Ble ground, as that does not meet UEFA requirements. So this fixture, just like their other European home ties, will take place at the Stade de Roudourou — home stadium of Guingamp.

Team news

Brest’s experienced French midfielder Jonas Martin, who has been sidelined since the end of November, is still missing due to a muscle tear.

The hosts will make a late decision on the fitness of Romain Del Castillo, who suffered a knee problem earlier this month.

Mahdi Camara will miss the second leg in Paris if he picks up another yellow card on Tuesday.

The visitors will be without midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery and forward Ibrahim Mbaye, with both players suffering knee injuries.

Other than that, Luis Enrique has a fully-fit squad to select from, while Fabian Ruiz will miss the second match if he is cautioned.

The stats

Eric Roy's Brest have done well to get to the knockout stages but have lost both Ligue 1 games to PSG this season

PSG have scored 16 goals in their last five matches against Brest.

Ousmane Dembele has already beaten his best season tally, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.

Dembele has an impressive recent record against Brest, finding the net five times in their two meetings this season.

Brest have only failed to score in two of their 15 home matches this campaign.

PSG have won their last eight away games across all competitions.

Prediction

This game seems to have landed at just the right time for PSG, who have not lost a game since their 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in November.

Brest have lost their last two matches at home and their awful head-to-head record against their opponents, will surely have an impact on Tuesday.

In Ousmane Dembele, PSG have the leading scorer in Ligue 1 and the former Barcelona man has found the net nine times in his club’s last five matches.

Brest will feel they can get on the scoresheet against a PSG team that have kept just one clean sheet in nine games, but the visitors should be too strong for the hosts.
