Blackburn vs Sheff Weds predictions: Owls to avoid Rovers reverse
- Sheffield Wednesday won the teams' first meeting this season 3-1
- Blackburn have failed to score in four of their last six matches
- Recommended bet: Tie or Sheff Wed double chance
There is only one game in the Championship on Sunday, but it is a huge fixture in the relegation battle between Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday.
Rovers took a massive step towards survival with their 1-0 win at Leeds last Saturday, while the Owls go into the match in 23rd place in the table and desperate for the points.
Team news
Blackburn's Andrew Moran is sidelined due to a thigh issue and Scott Wharton will be assessed after a back injury forced him off against Leeds.
Yasin Ayari has a hamstring injury while John Fleck, Ryan Hedges, Harry Leonard and Arnor Sigurdsson will miss the rest of the season.
Di’Shon Bernard and Ian Poveda remain sidelined for the Owls, but they have no new injury concerns. Ike Ugbo, Will Vaulks and Marvin Johnson all returned to the Wednesday starting line-up against Stoke.
The stats
Sheffield Wednesday have won three of their last five away league matches.
Blackburn's last five Championship home games have all produced fewer than three goals, while Rovers have won more league games on the road (7) than at Ewood Park (6).
Both teams have scored in six of the last eight Championship meetings between these clubs.
Blackburn have not scored more than once in any of their last six home games, but Sammie Szmodics is the Championship's top scorer with 24 goals.
Prediction
Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday have both shown improved form in recent weeks during a wide-open Championship battle, but while Rovers have lifted themselves close to safety the Owls remain deep in trouble.
The visitors have shown enough to suggest they are capable of taking something from this crucial game on Sunday, though, and backing them to either win or draw could pay off.
The Owls' away record makes grim reading as they have lost 15 of their 21 league games on the road. However, three of their five away successes this season have come in their last five awaydays.
Those were all against their fellow relegation battlers too, coming against Millwall, Rotherham and QPR, who were all desperate for points at the time.
Wednesday are in serious danger of the drop but their last four defeats have all been to top teams in Middlesbrough, Ipswich, Leeds and Leicester and they have done a much better job of picking up points when they are not tackling the division's top teams.
Rovers have the Championship's leading scorer in Sammie Szmodics but they have not been a free-scoring side in recent weeks.
They have not scored more than once in any of their last six home games and, while they broke free to win 5-1 at Sunderland on Easter Monday, they have lost 5-0 at Bristol City more recently.
Blackburn's inconsistency suggests they could easily follow their tremendous win over Leeds with another let-down performance.
