Fleetwood got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham.

Goals at the end of either half from Matty Virtue and Mark Helm did the damage as Pete Wild’s side made it four wins from six, having lost to Morecambe last time out.

Victory sees Fleetwood leap-frog above Cheltenham into 12th place in League Two, nine points behind seventh-placed Salford but with two games in hand.

Sheffield United loanee Louie Marsh almost had a dream debut for the Cod Army but saw his header kept out by Joe Day.

Marsh, the only bright spark in the opening 20 minutes, tried his luck again when he let rip with an instinctive long-range effort, although it was again without success.

The Blades’ young gun had a third opportunity on the stroke of half-time but he fired over the bar.

However, there was still time for Virtue, who bagged a brace in the reverse fixture, to fire the hosts in front in the 44th minute with a low strike into the bottom corner – his eighth goal of the season.

Fleetwood pushed for a second after the break and Day did well to keep out Ryan Graydon’s shot.

Marsh finally had the ball in the net just after the hour only for celebrations to be cut short by the lineman’s flag.

Fleetwood substitute Owen Devonport nodded just wide of the mark with 10 minutes to go as the home side looked to wrap the points up.

At the other end, Ethan Williams went close for the Robins as his deflected effort went narrowly wide, but Fleetwood secured the win in stoppage time when sub Helm netted his fifth goal of the campaign.
